Investment Highlights
For the third quarter, HAS reported a 9% ($150.4 million) increase in profit, or 99 cents per share, despite a 2% ($1.28 billion) decline in revenue. This compares to last year quarter’s $138.2 million, or $0.89 per diluted share in 2008, while topping consensus estimates of 93 cents.
The Company’s weak sales in toys for girls and preschools, as well as in games and puzzles, was significantly offset by strong sales for toys for boys such as GI Joe action figures and Transformers
“We believe we can grow revenues in 2009 if our consumer retail takeaway continues to improve in line with recent fourth quarter trends. We also continue to believe that the underlying strength of our brands and our commitment to our strategy will enable us to grow earnings per share in 2009, including the expected dilution from our television investment,” president and CEO Brian Goldner stated in the Company’s press release.
Looking forward, the Company expects dilution in the range of $0.04 to $0.05 per diluted share due to the investment in the joint venture with Discovery Communications and Hasbro’s virtual studio. In 2010, the expected dilution is $0.25 to $0.30 per diluted share.
As of quarter end, there was $222.2 million remaining in the Company’s current share repurchase authorization from the board of directors.

Investment Highlights
ETN posted net income of $1.14 per share for the third quarter of 2009, 39% below the previous-year quarter’s $1.87. Sales in the quarter came in at $3 billion, 26% below the same period in 2008. Adjusting for chargers, the Company’s operating earnings were better than expected, topping analysts’ consensus of 92 cents per share on revenue of $3.13 billion. “We are pleased with our third quarter results, which significantly exceeded our guidance. The results reflect the impact of the substantial enterprise-wide reductions in costs we have enacted during the past year. Our revenues in the third quarter grew 4 percent over the second quarter, reflecting equally the very early stages of recovery in our end markets and benefit from the strengthening of currencies against the dollar,” ETN president and CEO Alexander M. Cutler stated in the Company’s press release.
ETN further boosted investors’ confidence on the stock as the Company raised its full-year profit forecast. The Company is looking for full-year net income in the range of $2.05 and $2.15, and operating earnings per share in the range of $2.40 and $2.50. Its earlier guidance was for earnings in the range of $1.65 to $1.85 per share.
