“Coal cannot be clean,” Jim Cramer told fans of his “Mad Money” TV show Thursday. However, he explained that coal can be made cleaner in an incremental manner by removing sulfur, nitrogen and mercury through the use of technologies like scrubbers and boilers. Cramer said his favorite pick on cleaner coal technology is Foster Wheeler (FWLT) because the company is the market leader in coal fluidization boilers that can remove 95% of the sulfur from coal. Also, Foster has a strategic alliance with Praxair (PX) to develop oxy-coal combustion. Cramer also likes McDermott (MDR) for a play on cleaner coal and for a new-tech play. The company manufactures scrubbers and boilers for coal plants. Cramer said with a new president coming for the White House coal standards have a good chance of being lowered, and that would allow power companies to upgrade their factories - benefiting McDermott greatly. He also explained he likes MDR for its offshore drilling segment. The company just inked a joint venture in China to build ships that will support offshore rips.
